Mountain bike ride in Skaftafell National
Park
Trip difficulty 2 out of 5 possible
It´s a great idea to leave the busy Skaftafell National Park visitor center and it´s
surroundings for an amazing, off the beaten track, bike ride in spectacular landscape. We will bike
over sands and glacier-rivers, past a glacier tongue and into Iceland’s
tallest birch forest. Yes, I said forest, believe it or notþ This ride will take you from one extreme landscape
to another while stopping at some of the locals best kept secrets.
Biking through Morsárdalur valley we will witness the
destructive path left by the quickly receding Morsárjökull glacier and
the glacier river it feeds. We will aim for a forest, yes - a forest in Iceland,
formerly guarded by trolls and outlaws but nowadays, open for those that join us
on this ride. We will then leave our bikes behind for a short hike into a nice little gully.
In Vestragil gully where we get the chance to soak our feet in a perfect temperature hot spring. For the
braver of the bunch, a dive into true Icelandic spring water is an option. It is as
clear and cold as they say!
Due to the National Park´s restrictions on biking this is a unique
opportunity to explore the park in a short amount of time, learning
about the natural history of the area with our experienced guides. Rent a
bike or bring your own and join us on a tour through this wonderland of fire and
ice.
