Super Jeep self drive day
tour including glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull outlet glacier and a visit to Þórsmörk
glacier valley. Available directly from Reykjavík city.
Trip difficulty ranges from 2 - 3 out
of 5 possible.
The
lovely but rugged nature of Þórsmörk valley offers a unique composition of
glaciers, strange rock formations and believe it or not, trees. Not to forget the glacier rivers you will need to cross to get there. On the way to Þórsmörk we drive through the district where Njála, the best known of Icelandic
Sagas took place, visit the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall and
stop at the spectacular Stakkholtsgjá gorge. Driving on gravel roads
and fording various rivers you enter the Þórsmörk glacier valley
where we get the chance to enjoy its breathtaking surroundings.
Before
we head back to Reykjavik we stop at the glacier tongue of
Solheimajökull. There we will explore the glacier and I mean really,
really explore the glacier! We will provide you with crampons and all
the necessary glacier safety equipment. We will take a walk on the glacier and
observe the spectacular surroundings. It is an otherworldly scene,
rugged, raw and ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. As we drive
back to Reykjavik we will stop at the beautiful Skógafoss waterfall.
On this trip you get a great overview of some of the treasures of Icelandic nature.
